What’s it like being a Woman in The Trades?

Linda Hudek • Nov 15, 2022

Well, it isn’t that different from being a man in the trades!

I hear this question quite a lot, from both clients and those simply interested in my story. I am able to lift and move anything I need to, physically I am well built for this type of work. Not all people are- including both men and woman. I don’t like to ever pit women against men or say that women are better or less than men. If you are mechanically inclined and physically fit and able, and enjoy working with both your hands and your mind- then this is a great trade and career to pursue. 99% of the interactions I have with people are positive in regards their viewpoint of a woman in the blue collar trades. I have experienced some ignorant and rude behavior, but there will always be that minority group of people who choose to remain ignorant and foolish. And that’s ok- there’s a great Bible passage discussing this. “A fool does not delight in understanding, But in revealing his own mind.” Proverbs 18:2. Those people choose to live in ignorance. The work can and be hard for both men and women, depending on the project and what needs to be done. I work completely alone, and I am happy doing so. I enjoy the hard labor- even days when I need to jackhammer or move a 100 gallon commercial water heater into place. I have done my share of concrete, heavy lifting, shoveling and more. With no end in sight! This is not the easiest way to make a living- but it is incredibly satisfying to be the one called in an emergency and to keep businesses and homes functioning and safe. It’s an honest living and I can’t tell you how blessed I am to be a plumber. It was not my original plan and my Dad didn’t even want me to be one. But the Lord saw differently. So- not only can a woman be a plumber, but can she be a good, productive plumber as well. With the right motivations, the right education and a very strong work ethic. Can do!
